The “Agreement Spelling is a political issue, not linguistics, as everybody thinks,” says the Professor from Fundação Santo André, a University from Brazil, in his book “After all we are in agreement.” Language proposed by the Portuguese should be among the official languages of the UN.

A teacher from Fundação Santo André, Clarice Assalim launched last month the book “After all, we agree,” the first work that deals with the Agreement Spelling in a political context. The book also describes the importance of reform to the speakers of the Portuguese language, which is the 7th most spoken language in the world with more than 230 million people in 8 countries.

The teacher explained that the agreement begins to Spelling that effect from 2009, is not a linguistic issue as many think, but politics, especially the diplomatic point of view. “It will not directly affect the Portuguese Language, as these changes affect only 0.5% of the vocabulary,” she said.

For the author, young people will learn naturally, but the “older” tend to resist. “There is a sense of resistance, encouraged by emotional values. Some may even say that the reform modifies the language, which is not true. ”

Besides the diplomacy between the countries, the agreement would facilitate the students of the Portuguese language, as only Brazil and Portugal could do the test of proficiency, but no one recognized the examination of other, and Brazil does not recognize the proficiency test Portugal.

Unification with the Portuguese language can be included as an official language of the UN (United Nations). Before, there for two spellings (Brazilian and Portuguese), the documents could not be written in Portuguese. “Now the Portuguese should be an official language of the UN,” reports the teacher.

The 1.5 thousand copies of the book, released in November were sold in less than a month, is now going to the 2nd edition, with a circulation of 2.5 thousand, and now looks to be a third edition with the number of copies to be disclosed.

Clarice Assalim is doctorate in philology in Portuguese from the University of São Paulo, with thesis on the history of Portuguese Spelling. Teaches Portuguese Language and Linguistics in Fundação Santo André.
